Coach Janine Tips

Straight From the Table

01

Read the card first

Before the Charleston even starts, scan the 2026 card and pick a hand that matches your tiles — don't fall in love with a hand the tiles don't want.

02

Pick a hand and stick to it

Once you've chosen your hand, commit to it. Switching back and forth mid-game wastes tiles and time — trust your first read.

03

Use the Charleston to your advantage

The Charleston isn't just passing tiles — it's your first look at what everyone else is collecting. Pay attention to what comes across the table.

04

Think before you pass

Avoid passing a flower or a pair during the Charleston — once they leave your rack, they're hard to get back.

05

Play defense early

From the very first discard, watch for the flushes and runs other players are building. Sometimes the smartest tile is the one you keep out of the discard pile.

06

Never announce your hand is “dead.”

“Dead” means your tiles have been discarded and you can no longer pick them. Play defensively. If you need to, discard jokers.

07

Don't switch hands too late

Give yourself a deadline — usually after the second Charleston. If your hand isn't coming together, switch to a matching second choice before you're out of tiles to work with.

08

Keep your rack tidy

Organize your tiles by suit the moment you draw them. A clean rack means faster reads, quicker decisions, and fewer missed MahJonggs.

09

Have fun — that's the whole point

MahJongg is a social game first. Laugh at the bad hands, celebrate everyone's wins, and the wins will start coming to you.
